Outlook 2003 custom views disappear

I have defined several custom views that I use to display mail folders -
these views display specific columns & widths.



At some point, several of these custom views I'd created disappeared from
the Define Views table. When I attempted to recreate it using the same
name, I was told that the "View Already Existed" and therefore I had to
choose a different name. This has now happened again with several views
simultaneously disappearing.



Can anyone offer any suggestions as to what is happening, and how to solve
this issue?

Views are stored within a hidden folder in your Personal Folders; the folder
may have become corrupted. You can try using the Inbox Repair Tool
(scanpst.exe; search your hard drive for it) to see if it can repair any
errors in your .PST file. Make sure you let the program back up your file
before it makes any changes.

You may also want to back up your views occasionally -- you can either use
the method described at
http://www.exchangeadmin.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=8650, or you can
close Outlook, make a copy of your .pst file with a different name (like
Views Backup), open it in Outlook using File | Open | Outlook Data File, and
delete all the data from it. Close it by right-clicking its root folder and
selecting Close. It will be on your hard drive if you ever need to grab a
view from it.

I am working in an Exchange 2003 environment for server-side messages, and I
also have a PST file for archival / long-term storage. I manually move
messages from my server-side message store to appropriate folders in my PST.

In this environment, are the views stored in Exchange or in the PST?

If the views are stored in Exchange, is there any way to backup the views so
that they can be restored should the need arise?

Views created for all folders are stored in the default folders, views for a
specific folder are stored in that folder. Use the steps at
http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/copy_views.htm to back up the all folders
views.
