Pardon me if this gets somewhat wordy but this issue truly has me
stumped.
My company is in the process of defining an enterprise-wide deployment
plan for Office 2003 and we'd like to include a customized welcome
message for Outlook.
I know that in Outlook 2000 (and older) you could simply edit the
contents of the welcome.msg file located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office if you wanted to customize that initial welcome message.
However, it doesn't appear to be that simple in Outlook 2003. First
off, the directory is now C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11
and welcome.msg doesn't exist in that folder. In fact, it doesn't
appear to exist anywhere on the machine - not that I've been able to
find anyway.
We are creating a customized installation using the Custom
Installation Wizard that is included in the Office 2003 resource kit
and since there are no options within that installation wizard to
customize the Outlook welcome message, we were hoping to simply create
a custom welcome message, and have that custom.msg file copied to the
appropriate directory on the target machine but that doesn't appear to
be the correct process.
Additionally, I've created a custom welcome message and saved it to
the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11 folder and the OS
(Windows XP Pro) automatically appends a .htm extension. On top of
that, it also creates a welcomemsg_files folder under the Office11
directory. Even after doing that and editing the registry to return
Outlook to it's "first run" state, the welcome message that is
displayed is the Microsoft default version - not the one that I
created.
I've tried to remove the .htm extension to the welcome.msg file but
that didn't resovle the issue.
Sorry for the lengthy post but I wanted to fully illustrate the
situation and provide as much information about the steps I've taken.
Thanks,
