Outlook 2003 Default Mail Client setting grayed out.

I use another mail application but Oulook keeps forcing itself as the default
whenever I have to start it (I use OL2003 for my work mail, another client
for my personal mail).

The setting in the Options menu is selected and grayed out -- how can I
change it?

Try opening Internet Explorer, clicking Tools>Internet Options>Programs and
seeing if you can change the E-mail drop-down to be the client you like.
