Outlook 2003 - Desktop Alert interferes with typing new message

For the past few weeks we have noticed an issue when typing an email message
and the desktop alert appears for a new message, ability to type is
temporarily stopped. After a few seconds some of the text appears in the
message. Has anyone else been experiencing this problem or have a solution?
