outlook 2003 disconnected from Exchange 2003 after Exchange reboo

2 exchange servers, new01 and old01 both running exchange 2003 sp2.
new01 is working well, Outlook clients and outlook web access work
old01 was working well but since an unsheduled power outage caused a reboot
clients can use outlook web access but can no longer connect using an outlook
client.
Outlook clients say 'disconnected' with error 0x8004011D
This affects all outlook clients on old01 ( server problem? )
Attempts to download just the global address list or the inbox have the same
8004011D error
I have checked new01 vs. old01 settings and cannot see any difference except
the server names.
old01 server is both sending and receiving mail from the internet.
Both old01 and new01 run sophos puremessage spam filter and mcafee antivirus.
Stopped the mcafee antivirus services and rebooted - no improvement
Stopped sophos puremessage services and rebooted - no improvement
Checked permissions on global address book and mail files, nothing has changed
No firewall running on old01 [ firewalling done elsewhere ]
Moving client mailboxes to new01 allows the client to connect using outlook
old01 will respond to ping, accepts remote console connections and appears
to be running quite happily apart from letting outlook 2003 clients connect.
We have googled this for days. Any ideas?
