Outlook 2003 excessively slow operation

Outlook 2003 frequently locks up and Task Manager shows 'not responding'
against MS Outlook. The remainder of the time all actions/instructions take
an excessive time to execute. Typically; it will take many minutes for an
e-mail to open or to show the blank reply sheet when answering an e-mail.
The operating system is MS XP Home.
I have tried removing Office Professional 2003 from the PC and re-installing
Office, to no avail.

I would welcome suggestions as to how to fix this problem and to operate
Outlook normally.
