Outlook 2003 hangs on exit

Windows XP SP2 computer has Office XP. Installed Outlook 2003 and configured
profile. Runs fine. But, Outlook.exe continues to run upon exit and displays
icon in the notification area. Cannot start Outlook again without rebooting
or killing the Outlook.exe process in task manager. If I try to start
Outlook again, multiple Outlook.exe processes are created but no Outlook
windows appear.
