Outlook 2003 hangs when open html emails

If i go to Help Detect and Repair it works fine until I close Outlook, when I
start the program again it does the same thing.
Sometimes doesn't hang but it takes a minute to open the email, if it is
text email, it is slow too but not as bad.

I have exactly the same problem.

When first opening Outlook 2003 SP2, if I create a new message or reply to a
message, in HTML format, the CPU useage outlook.exe is 50% or there abouts.

If I wait a minute it will fall to 0%, but if I even touch the keyboard, for
example to enter a single letter, then the useage will go up to 40-50%, and
to all intents, outlook hangs.
It really is just busy with the commands, but can take minutes to settle down.
Useing the Detect and Repair, solves the issue until next time.
There is no issue with RTF documents.
If I have a document in HTML with the problem, and convert it to RTF, the
problem goes away instantly.
The PC is up to date with all MS updates.
I run several virus/malware/spyware/ etc etc programs and all say the PC is
clean, as does defender etc.

Any ideas guys ??

there is a problem with a recent update - it's apparently worse is you have
a large number of sites in the restricted zone (in IE). It apparently checks
the zone listing in the registry each time you type a letter.

The easiest fix is to remove the unnecessary zones from the restricted zone.
If that is not acceptable, use plain text for reading and composing.

Thank you Diane, yes I've checked the Restricted Zones and there are a bunch
of them, the problem is I don't know which ones could be deleted.

In my computer, just by going to Tools, Options, Security, change to
Internet, pushing Apply, changing back again to Restricted Zones and Applying
again, solves the problem until next time I close the program.
It looks for me like it is something that Outlook 2003 doesn't save right
when is closing.
Any guess?.
Thank you for your interest.

Honestly, just delete all of those restricted zones - easiest way is to
reset Internet Explorer's settings (Tools, Internet Options, Advanced tab).
Do not put outlook into the internet zone. If they come back after you reset
IE's settings, then a spy-bot program is restoring them.

Thanks Dianne,

This works.

I deleted KB931768 and the problem went away instantly. I didnt touch the
restricted sites area.
I look forward to the replacement patch from Microsoft.
I did get a little warning message that several other updates / programs may
not work if I deleted this patch, but no harm so far.

Great answer

Honestly - deleting the restricted zone data is a much better solution than
removing the patch. Other options are using plain text or using Word as the
editor. Do not use RTF formatted messages - you might as well use plain text
as anyone not using Outlook is guaranteed to only get plain text and will
not be able to access any attachments you may include.
