outlook 2003 hangs when opening emails with attachements

Outlook 2003 hangs for at least a minute if not longer when I open emails
with attachements. I know this should take slightly longer than e-mails
without attachements, but the hang time is getting longer and longer.

I am running XP and getting my e-mail delivered via a POP account, so I
think it is a client issue rather than a server issue.

Does anyone have any solutions to stop outlook from hanging?

If you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook, disable this
integration and try again.
If you are opening an Office attachments also verify that Office integration
of your virus scanner is disabled.
