Outlook 2003 in Vista - cannot send email

Hi there,

I've installed Outlook 2003 in Vista Ultimate, after setting up the account
properly. I can receive my email but I can't seem to send email. Please
help.

Many Thanks.

I am having the same problem. I have Outlook 2003 and Vista. I can send and
receive emails just fine except for with one person! I can receive email
from this person but cannot respond or email her directly unless I use the
web based email program from my ISP. There are no error messages, the email
that I try to send goes into my sent items folder just like it sent, but she
never receives it. She has been working with her ISP for about a month now
and they haven't been able to figure it out. My ISP says its an Outlook
problem since I CAN respond to her using the web based email. I was
wondering if there was an issue between Outlook 2003 and Vista.

Hello James, I tried the repair took but she still can't receive any emails
from me. Any other suggestions?

Hi Tania,I think you may need to delete the contact item for her in your
address book or the contact folder and create a new one.

Hey James, that didn't work either... bummer. I have ordered Outlook 2007,
do you think that will solve the problem when I install that? I have Vista.

It is unlikely that updating your Outlook version will fix this problem.

You said that you couldn't reply. Does that mean you can send a new messahe
from Outlook to this person? WHat if you manually enter the mail address?
When you try to send, do you get a non-delivery report back from the mail
server?

Hello Brian. No, I cannot reply OR send to her... and ONLY her as far as I
can tell. I have tried manually entering her email address and that doesn't
work either. I don't get any messages for non-delivery. The email goes into
my "sent" items just as if it went... but she never receives it. We have
checked for blocked senders on both sides and that's not it either. I can
send her emails from my Charter webmail account, but not from Outlook (I HATE
webmail BTW!!) The only thing that has really changed was I got a new
computer and it has Vista, but it worked for awhile (sending/replying to her)
and then it just stopped.

Then it's not an Outlook problem. If it makes it to the Sent Items folder,
then your SMTP server has accepted it for delivery and the problem lies on
that server, your recipient's server, or a mail rounter between the two.
Have your ISP help you track the message (they'll have server logs) to see
whether it gets routed after being received.

Thanks Brian, I'll be calling my ISP then... not looking forward to that,
they never want to help. They'll try a couple of things and then say "it's
not our problem".

Hello again! I called my ISP and asked for their help again. They said they
do not keep server logs to track messages. They said that since the messages
are moving to my sent items folder that they ARE being sent and that since I
can send from the webmail that their servers are working properly. Then the
genious asked me "what makes you think that the messages aren't going
through?"... HELLO!!! Because the recipient never receives them!!! DUH!!!

I have asked the recipeint to check with her ISP one more time.

Amazing. I'd think they'd be able to track a new message if they watched
for it, though. I wonder what mail server they use.

I don't know what mail server they use... is there a way to find out and
would it help if I did find out? Where we stand right now is my ISP says
it's her problem and there's nothing more they can do and her ISP says the
same thing! So I guess we can't communicate! That sucks! Do you or anyone
else have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Tania

It was merely idle curiosity on my part.

What I'd do is bypass the ISP's SMTP server by creating a gmail account for
myself and using Google's outgoing server.

That sounds good but I have NO idea how to do that... will I still be able to
use Outlook?

I checked out the gmail thing and it looks to me like it's just another
webmail... I already have charter's webmail and can communicate that way, but
I wanted to be able to communicate with this person with my Outlook. Am I
misunderstanding something?

Yes you are misunderstanding something. Gmail has a webmail interface,
sure, but it also allows POP/SMTP or IMAP/SMTP access. If you create a
gmail account you can feed the Gooogle SMTP server using Outlook, just like
you can feed any other SMTP server with Outlook.
