outlook 2003 inbox

always shows 1 message when none is in the box. how can I correct this.

Shows one email where? One unread email in the Inbox that you can't find? One
outgoing email in the Outbox that you can't see?

If it's the Inbox, make sure that you haven't filtered your view. Click on
View > Current View and ensure that Messages is what's checked.
