Outlook 2003 Incoming Messages Disappearing

This has been posted before, but unfortunately none of the solutions
that I discovered resolve the issue in my case.

I just had to rebuild a hard drive as a result of a malware problem.
After installing Outlook 2003 and restoring the pst files, all of my
incoming messages download but simply disappear. They are nowhere to
be found in the data file. I can see in the status bar that dozens of
messages are downloading, but they never make it to the data file.
When I go to my email provider's web site I can see that the messages
have been downloaded from the server.

I have investigated the following suspects, none of which is
responsible for this:

- There are no filters applied. All messages are being displayed. I
even opened outlook using outlook.exe /cleanviews to confirm this.
- The junk mail handling is not behind this. It is not set to
permanently delete junk messages. There are no messages in the junk
mail folder.
- No rules are running that would divert the messages to another
location.
- I have turned off the AV protection. There are no messages in
quarantine.
- I have no add-ons or other third party applications that might be
interfering in the delivery of inbound messages.

I am completely baffled. Can anybody think of anything that I have
missed or come up with any other ideas? I'm using XP with all updates
installed.

Thanks,
Randy

One more interesting fact: Even after downloading the 70 or so
incoming messages, the size of the pst file is exactly the same both
before and after the download. This proves that the messages are
nowhere in the file.

Which I have, quite a few times.

Here's how this problem gets resolved:

- Uninstall Outlook and reinstall.
- Create a new pdf and set up the email account(s)
- Add the old pdf to the data files and copy the contents of each
folder from the old pdf to the new.
- Close the old pdf.

Sometimes the sledge hammer is more effective than the scalpel, I
guess.
