Hello,
I was recently trying to re-install Outlook 2003 (which I have done several
times previously on the same computer using the same disc with no problems),
but as it was installing this time I received this error:
======
Error 1402 Setup cannot open the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\Applications\WINWOR
D.EXE\TaskbarExceptionsIcons\WordMail.
Verify that you have permissions to access the registry or contact your
Information Technology department for assistance.
======
As mentioned, I have installed (and uninstalled) Outlook 2003 from my
computer several times. Why am I suddenly getting this error message ? And
what can I do about it ?
I'm only an intermediate beginner, but I have already checked out the
information at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687
and have gone through all the relevant suggestions for resolving the issue
(except the one that refers to SpySweeper, which I don't have). But I still
get the error at the same point during the installation process.
Someone else added to the information at the above link by suggesting I do
the following (which I did):
# Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine window.
# Locate and select the following key:
\Software\Microsoft\Office
1. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
2. Click the registry key for the user who is currently logged on, and
ensure that Read and Full Control permissions are both set to Allow.
3. Click the Advanced button, ensure that the user who is currently logged
on is selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and
that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column.
4. Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with
entries shown here that apply to child objects check box, and clear the
Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects.
Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box.
5. Click Apply, and then click Yes when you are prompted to continue.
6. Click OK, and then click OK again.
7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
After this (and rebooting) I still could not install Outlook.
???
Any help would be appreciated !
Scott
Btw, in case any of this is relevant I have XP SP2. My computer (a HP
Pavilion desktop) came with Office but I uninstalled it (through Add/Remove
Programs) since I never use it. The Outlook 2003 I have is from a
legitimate purchase of that item only--not a whole Office package. So, I
don't know what folder or registry items pertaining to Office remain on my
system or what effect they may or may not be having on my attempt to install
Outlook (again).
