Hi folks, I would very much welcome a friendly hand with the following
problem...
Following a computer crash, I reinstalled Microsoft Vista Ultimate 32bit on
a fresh PC (reformatted HD) and after I finished all the Vista upgrades etc
I proceeded with the re-installation of Office 2003 followed by SP3.
Everything went smoothly.
Next, I wanted to configure Outlook. I have some backup files but I don't
get the system to read them; in fact even without copying them onto the hard
disk, Outlook just doesn't let me configure it. Here's what happens:
1.- I start Outlook.
2.- A popup window named "Configuring Outlook" immediately appears. It gives
2 lines namely "Configuring Outlook Accounts" and then "Creating Welcome
Message" (I am given no opportunity to configure anything at all!).
3.- Now, I must wait quite a while.
4.- Eventually, an error message shows up, saying "The connection to the
Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online or
connected to complete this action".
5.- After I acknowledge, another popup window appears, asking me to fill out
the Microsoft Exchange Server and some Mailbox name.
6.- No matter what I type in there, the name won't be resolved (I do not
have a Microsoft Exchange Server here anyway).
7.- So I push "Cancel" - and another message appears: "Unable to open your
default email folders. The file [...]/outlook.ost is not an offline folder".
I have deleted this file and tried again but Outlook seems to regenerate it
each time I try, and with the same sequence of events.
8.- I click "Ok" - and Outlook closes down. No more, no less.
I see no possibility to get the right configuration details into Outlook
this way.
It can't be that Office 2003 fails to run on a Vista system, I used it for
half a year like this with full satisfaction.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? Strangely enough: I found quite
some references to this erroneous behaviour on the Internet but found no
solution anywhere.
