Outlook 2003 is very slow & crashes when receiving email what is .

When receiving email in Outlook 2003 my computer is very slow and hangs up
often. I'm running a new Dell with 1 gig of ram and Dual Core pentium with
Windows XP Pro operating system. Is there any corrective action?

What type of email account are you using? POP3, Exchange, something else? Are
there any error messages and/or numbers? Have you looked for Outlook/Office
errors in your application event viewer? Is it the actual PC that's slow or
Outlook? Have you checked your task manager? Do you have antivirus scanning
incoming/outgoing mail?

Thanks for your reply!
Using POP3. There are no error msg's. Honestly, don't know how to access
Outlook/Office application event viewer; the computer is lightning fast in
all other applications. I have to use the task manager to close the
application when it hangs up. I'm running McAfee software,I've had the
scanning on and off with no change.

To access the computer's event viewer, click on Start, then Run, then type
in: eventvwr and hit enter. When the event viewer console opens up, highlight
the Application event viewer and look for red (error) events. If there are
any related to Outlook or Office, please provide the Event ID and source.

Regarding antivirus, it's possible you may have to uninstall and then
reinstall McAfee, configuring it to not scan email. Scanning incoming and
outgoing email can really slow things down and it doesn't increase your
security at all.

Do you have any anti-spyware software scanning email? That would slow things
down as well.

Also, check for any Outlook Add Ins. (Tools > Options > Tab: Other >
Advanced Options > Add In Manager) Not all of them are compatible with
Outlook 2003 and can cause conflicts. If there are any installed, remove
them. Add them back one at a time to see if one of them "breaks" Outlook.
