Outlook 2003 msmapi32.dll error with POP3

R

RSGlobalNet

When I use Outlook 2003 to try to receive mail from my POP3 account I receive
the message "Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to
close."

If I create a new profile, I can receive mail from the POP3 account once
without any errors. If I try to receive mail again, I get the error.

The Exception Information is:
Code: 0xc00000fd
Address: 0x0000000035f8480e

The Error Signature is:
AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 11.0.8010.0 AppStamp:43d16d53
ModName: msmapi32.dll ModVer: 11.0.8002.0 ModStamp:4373069d
fDebug: 0 Offset: 0001480e

My Outlook 2003 version is 11.8010.8028 SP2.

I have used this POP3 account for years without problems. I ran Scanpst.exe
and it did not help.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Thank you.

What is logged to the Event Viewer?
Does it work when you use Outlook Safe Mode?
If you have a virus scanner that integrates with Outlook disable this
integration and try again.

Have you tried a repair on Office already? Insert the CD and choose Repair
from the setup. You might need to reapply SP2 and additional hotfixes
afterwards.

I ran the menu option Help | Detect and Repair. Is that the same thing?

I can also demonstrate the same problem on another computer that has Outlook
2003. I created a profile for my POP3 account, ran send/receive successfully
once, but then when I attempted to send/receive a second time I got the
error. Both machines have the same version of Outlook 2003, but one is
Windows 2000 and one is Windows XP Professional.

Yep, is the same thing.

Do both machines run Norton? What else do these machines have in common?

A thing you can try is to delete the msmapi32.dll file and have repair have
its way again. Deleting the file in XP might be tricky if it is protected
but you should always be able to delete it in XP Safe Mode.

I ran the menu option Help | Detect and Repair. Is that the same thing?

I can also demonstrate the same problem on another computer that has Outlook
2003. I created a profile for my POP3 account, ran send/receive
successfully
once, but then when I attempted to send/receive a second time I got the
error. Both machines have the same version of Outlook 2003, but one is
Windows 2000 and one is Windows XP Professional.

My Outlook 2003 version is 11.8010.8028 SP2.

I have used this POP3 account for years without problems. I ran
Scanpst.exe
and it did not help.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Thank you.

I renamed msmapi32.dll and started Outlook 2003, which then appeared to
automatically run repair to restore the dll. This did not fix the problem.

Yes, both machines run Symantec Antivirus. What they really have in common
is the same version of Outlook 2003. Other than that they have some of the
same applications installed, but neither had been changed in a long time
(other than the usual automatic updates from Symantec, Microsoft, etc.).

A thing you can try is to delete the msmapi32.dll file and have repair have

Alright, running a bit out of option here ;-)
Have you tried logging on with a completely new user on that machine
already? This way we have no old settings or possible mailbox corruptions to
worry about.
If the issue still occurs then I would go for a complete uninstall of both
Office and Norton and then install Office again. Use the new user (clear the
settings again, also locally) to check if the problem is still there.

I created a new user, logged on as that new user, configured Outlook 2003,
and let it receive the messages in the POP3 account. Upon receiving the
messages once, Outlook must have automatically attempted another
send/receive, which resulted in the same error message.

I noticed that you were helping with another case earlier this year that
appears to be identical:

http://www.thennews.com/d/n25/Outlook 2003 SP2 crashes when trying to send receive.php

Do you know if this was solved or do you know how to contact the person who
reported it?

Alright, running a bit out of option here ;-)
Have you tried logging on with a completely new user on that machine
already? This way we have no old settings or possible mailbox corruptions to
worry about.
If the issue still occurs then I would go for a complete uninstall of both
Office and Norton and then install Office again. Use the new user (clear the
settings again, also locally) to check if the problem is still there.

Roady said:
Yep, is the same thing.

A thing you can try is to delete the msmapi32.dll file and have repair
have
its way again. Deleting the file in XP might be tricky if it is protected
but you should always be able to delete it in XP Safe Mode.

I ran the menu option Help | Detect and Repair. Is that the same thing?

I can also demonstrate the same problem on another computer that has
Outlook
2003. I created a profile for my POP3 account, ran send/receive
successfully
once, but then when I attempted to send/receive a second time I got the
error. Both machines have the same version of Outlook 2003, but one is
Windows 2000 and one is Windows XP Professional.

Today I configured Outlook 2000 on a different computer for this POP3
account. I allowed it to download all of the messages, ran another
send/receive, and it worked without any errors.

So, this problem appears to be isolated to Outlook 2003. I have replicated
it on two separate computers with Outlook 2003, one with Windows 2000 and one
with Windows XP.

Any ideas?
