outlook 2003 not functioning properly

i recently bought a new dell notebook that came with vista home premium
operating system and mcafee security center, after installing my office
professional version 11 i setup my outlook 2003 with 4 email accounts and
imported my pst contacts and old emails. initially outlook ran fine but now
the reading pane is blank, auto send receive doesn't work and none of the
reminder notifications pop up. when i disabled the mcafee on-access scanner
service through task manager all the outlook functions come back on. i have
removed the mcafee security center and installled my norton internet security
product and have the same issues. i can manually send and receive and can
open my emails. i have contacted mcafee, norton and dell support without any
good results and i have gone back to the factory restore option and tried
reloading everything twice now. i'm hoping someone can point in the right
direction to getting this fixed as i like and rely on my outlook daily.

Uninstall your AV, if using Norton use the tool on their site to completely
remove. Clear your temp folder & reboot.
Test Outlook, if all OK renistall your AV *without* the Outlook
intergration - its not needed anyway since the AV on demand scanner will
still catch anything that tries to install
