Outlook 2003 on Windows 7 cannot open zip files

Hi,
we have deployed Windows 7 Enterprise x86 and have Outlook 2003 SP3 installed.
We have an issue where users cannot open zip files from within Outlook.

When the user gets the e-mail and double clicks the attachment they are
prompted whether they want to save or open - when they click open nothing
happens, no errors and I'm not seeing any additional activity using process
monitor or process explorer.

If the user clicks save they can save the file.
We have no third party archiving utility installed as we are just using the
native features of explorer, and would like to keep it this way.

We have some users that are using Outlook 2007 who are not experiencing this
issue.

Can any one assist here or confirm whether this is supported under Outlook
2003?

Thanks

Outlook 2003 is fully compatible with Windows 7

Outlook 2003 is compatible with Windows 7.

Opening attachments of any type is supported as long as there is a program
installed that handles them but here is something goofy with the zips in
outlook 2003 on win7. Zips do open from the email, if you have a different
zip program installed.

You should be able to open zip files under Outlook 2003. What Windows
does with zip files is a Windows setting. Have someone with the problem
open a command prompt window and enter the following:

c:\> regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

The try the zip file in Outlook again. What happens?

when I run the command I get same erroe as Diane;

The module "zipfldr.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllUnregisterServer
was not found.

Make sure that "zipfldr.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again

Well, that _used_ to work, but I hadn't had occasion to try it o
Windows 7. Sorry for the wild goose chase

it appears to be a by design issue which applies to Outlook 2003 on Windows
7. There is registry value that controls how the explorer handles certain
file types for specific applications:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellCompatibility\Applications\outlook.exe
STRIPFOLDERBIT (string value is present)
VERSION = 11.*,10.*,9.*,8.*,7.*

When this compatibility data is in place, Windows will not launch the zip
file and treat it like a folder.

A workaround is to edit the value of the registry data which is to change
the data value of the "Version" string to 10.*;9.*;8.*;7.*. However, since
changing this registry value is untested and could possibly result in other
problems surfacing with Outlook 2003 (For example, can not add zip
attachments in an email message.) So please be aware before making this
change.

Before
----------
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellCompatibility\Applications\outlook.exe
STRIPFOLDERBIT (string value is present)
VERSION = 11.*,10.*,9.*,8.*,7.*

After
-------
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellCompatibility\Applications\outlook.exe
STRIPFOLDERBIT (string value is present)
VERSION = 10.*,9.*,8.*,7.*

I tried a reg hack that I found on a win7 forum - it doesn't work either. My
only suggestion right now is to install a zip program (there are several
free ones available) or have the users save zips first until someone figures
it out.

Thanks. It works, but then so does installing a zip utility. :)
