Outlook 2003 on XP Media Center up to latest rev.

G'day all,

Every time I startup Outlook 2003, I keep finding the:
View -> Toolbars -> Customize: "Always show full menus" box unchecked.

I don't recollect that having been a problem in the past. So I'm pretty
sure I [re]set something...but can't seem to put my fingers back on it. Can
anyone tell me how I can make that selection _stay_ set?

TIA,
Dusty Bleher -- Everett, Wa.

Thank you for your gracious reply, but I'd already done that in response to
another "solution" I'd read about in this NG for another problem. Did it
again just to be sure...
A good and useful link, thank you. However, I carefully followed all of the
steps, several times, even threw in a reboot...still, no joy!

The only thing I did manage to do was loose the "News" button in the "GO"
menu. So I got to go through that silly little circus just for the fun of
it...so that I could get back here.

Any other ideas? I'm eager for some new ones, cuz the ones I had certainly
didn't seem to do me any good...:)-o)!

TIA,
Dusty

Locate the following registry key;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Common\Toolbars
Here set the value for "AdaptiveMenus" to 0

Okay. Checked that...and it's already "0" (which could be because I'd
already reset that value by going throug the "view" menu access.... Now
what?

Thanks for that tip, Robert. Did that. It worked. But the "AdaptiveMenus"
bit seems to get reset every time I [re]start Outlook.

Is there any way to get that &^%$#@!~ bit cleared and turned off
permanently? Deleted from my machine? Gone forever...? Obliterated? <big
sigh!>

TIA,
Dusty

Sounds like you have a corruption in your Windows Profile then. This could
be cause your profile doesn't get unloaded correctly on logoff. For this you
can use the User Hive Cleanup tool from Microsoft.

Additionally you could try to change the value when in Windows Safe Mode.

Okay, did that, and tried it in safe-mode as suggested below as well. Still
the same result. But hey! As an added bonus, "Windows Security Alerts" now
tells me that my Firewall and AV have stopped working! The firewall applet
comes up grayed-out. And no amount of prying, trying, or praying seems to
be doing anything.

The proverbial: "Out of the frying pan and into the fire!"

I've run HiJackThis!, Registry-Mechanic, Spybot S&D, Stinger, the LOC
downloadable tool, and tried to run Counter-Spy...which both wouldn't
install and when finally installed, won't run.

In the process of trouble-shooting this, via this NG and others, led me to a
website that seemed to put up a flash of porno-images. I killed the
connection (physically) and rebooted. What was really annoying was that
that webpage looked like a valid, Microsoft run knowledgebase page. It had
all the little logo's and pictures. I'm a pretty careful guy in that arena,
and they sucked me in 110%! I ran various tools I use to find junk like
that, and got NADA!

In the past, when things got really nasty, I found CounterSpy as my best
ace-in-the-hole. I leave it uninstalled cuz that *&^%$#@!~ thing always
wants to run the whole show and do it continuously in the foreground. So to
get back at me, it won't run/load, citing some service or other that won't
let it. A complete uninstall and reinstall doesn't seem to touch it...<big
sigh!>

All because of that damn "You're Too Stupid To Figure Things Out for
Yourself" switch...the one that only lets you see those parts of the menu's
that the proggy thinks you need to watch. Argh! I hate $hit like that!
This system used to work just fine, and then apparently some update or other
wiped that out. Sad, that...

Anybody got any other bright ideas...?

L8r all,
Dusty

Update to the previous reply...

I finally decided to hell with it all, and I'll simply restore to a previous
state... Nice thought. Good idea. Sadly, the system won't let me restore
to any of my previous states. Good concept, that. Too bad it can't work!

Damn it!
