Outlook 2003-Outlook today does not save customization

Evertime I customize the "Outlook Today" window it will not save my changes and requires constant re-saving. this is a pain in the ...furthermore, I believe I'm missing something where I believe an icon/picture is supposed to reside on the "Outlook Today" window (there is a red "X" present rather the picture/icon). Can anyone help me out

Was this an upgrade from a prior Office version? If yes, then try creating
a new mail profile under Control Panel->Mail Icon.
