Outlook 2003-- overtype feature

from time to time (without warning and not based on any
changes in setting that I make), Outlook starts typing in
Overtype mode. This is very anoying as I hate overtype
mode. I am using MS Word when I type in Outlook but
Overtype is clearly off in MS word. Why is it appearing
in Outlook? how can I turn it off for good? Many thanks
