Outlook 2003 reading pane now shows nothing

For some reason my reading pane now says "ite m can not be displayed. Open
the item to read". But, no items will open. After years of reliable use,
what's going on? Have I been hit by a virus? Thanks much!! (PS am running
XP Pro on Lenovo T60.)
