Outlook 2003 requiring SMTP password - already given!

L

Leo McIntyre

I recently changed ISP's. I have changed the SMTP server details in outlook,
for all email accounts, and followed through repeating the process with live
help from the ISP helpdesk, in an attempt to eliminate this problem.

Outlook sends and receives emails but continually throws up an smtp password
request dialog box.

I have entered the correct details, and rechecked them. I have checked that
the ISP's server does not require password identification, and that the
Outlook settings pertaining to this possibility are unchecked. I have
rebooted. I have deleted and recreated the account in Outlook, with the
original, and (separately) with a new password given to me by the ISP, and
was able to successfully send emails using each account with its respective
password.

The problem persists.

I have also set up a single email account using outlook express and the
email account and mailbox provided by my new ISP, and this tested out fine,
with no repetitive password requests. Therefore, it seems certain that the
problem is within Outlook, and not originating with the ISP's server.

Please help, this annoying little dialog has interrupted my typing of this
thread at least 20 times. I'm starting to feel like Sideshow Bob in a field
of rakes. THWACK! there it goes again - UGGHHHHH!

Try creating a new Outlook profile and importing the account settings from
Outlook Express. The important part is creating a new profile, not just
importing the account details into the current profile.

Have you also checked at Tools\Email Accounts\Next\Change\More Settings\Outgoing Server ?

Thanks Hal, but now things are getting really weird....
The original problem has fixed itself, i.e. no more password requests, BUT....
now my email signature settings have all been changed, and I'm getting
frozen "tooltips" remaining on screen that can't be removed by refreshing.

I have updated my virus definitions and nothing new has shown up but I
wonder if something has slipped under the radar.
Any suggestions?

I still think it might be worthwhile creating a new profile. Damaged
profiles often exhibit some really bizarre symptoms and they usually can't
be fixed. Creating a new one is a cheap and easy way to find out. I would
also recommend disabling any virus scanning on incoming email. This does
NOT put you at risk for infection because the real-time scanning these
programs do will catch and kill any attached viruses the instant you try to
do anything with an infected message.

Thanks for your help Hal,
I will give it a go, it's probably time I did some password changes anyway.
