[Outlook 2003] Saving pictures

Hi,

How comes I have troubles in saving pictures a friend send me by email ? He
sent me animated gif and a jpeg background, but Outlook 2003 only allows
saving them in bmp format.

To correct this I had checked "read mail in plain text", so all his pictures
appear as attachments and I was able to save them in their original format.

Any way to correct such a strange behaviour ?
