Outlook 2003 - Search folder unread count does not update

I have set up a search folder in Outlook 2003 for emails from a yahoo group I
subscribe to. As I read emails & optionally delete them when in the search
folder, the unread email count does not decrement despite defining the search
folder to 'show number of unread items'. For example, I might start with 15
unread and view & delete them all, but the counter stills shows as 15.

I have figured out that the search folder unread count includes what's in
the "Deleted Items" bucket. These items do not display in the search folder,
so why do they count in the unread count for the search folder? What do I
need to do in Outlook to get it to show the correct unread count i.e. match
the count with what it's selected for displaying?

What I have also found is that my selections on the "Advanced" tab are not
being followed. I have selected the field "In Folder" with criteria
"doesn't contain X..X" where X..X is part of the name of a folder. It still
shows the emails in the folder (grrhhh!). Any ideas why?
PS All these emails are 'read' so are not impacting on the first question.
