Outlook 2003 slow to open word attachments

Hi,

I'm experiencing a problem in outlook 2003 when opening
attachments. When I open a word document (of any version)
Outlook 2003 hangs for some 20-30 seconds while it opens
the attachment. If you then attempt to open the attachment
after that it opens immediately.

I'm running Windows 2000 Pro on a network (of all win2k pro
boxes) with Office 2003 installed on every workstation. We
also run Exchange 2000 (with Exchange caching mode turned
on - doesn't matter if its on/off)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Could it be the virusscanner that is scanning the message? If not; does it
also happen when you've already got Word open?

Thanks for you reply.

That was our first thought that it must be the Virus
Scanner. We're running Sophos AV. I've just checked the
settings though and I couldn't see an obvious option for
scanning attachments that I could then disable.

As for it occuring if word is open, i'm not too sure. For
the cases we've had so far I think word has been closed.

Any Ideas?

Well this makes a difference; whether Word needs to load or not. See if
Sophos has any Office integration or Macro scanning tool. This will probably
cause the delay then.

Ah apologies Roady, i've just been informed by some of my
colleagues that they day occurs regardless if word is open
- would that make that great a difference?. Despite this I
went to check the outlook advanced options
(tools->options->Other->Advanced options) and then check
the COM Addins and Addin manager there are no Sophos/AV
related plugins. Do you know of anywhere else I could
check for such addins.

The Office integration will most likely be a setting from within Sophos
itself then. How big are the attachments anyway?

The attachments are basically small word documents so about
50-100kb. I can't see any settings in Sophos that indicate
its integrated with Office but I suspect your right and
that Sophos is scanning the file on opening it.
