Outlook 2003 slow with contacts

M

Matt

I have a new computer and am trying to move my contacts from another computer
to the new one. I'm trying to determine how to best get my contacts into the
"Contacts" folder without hanging my system. Whenever I get my contacts into
the Contacts folder Outlook takes over my CPU every 6 seconds or so!

After reading some previous posts, I tried saving the contacts to a .pst
file that I then opened into Outlook as another Personal File Folder. This
works well and does not take over my CPU until I try to cut / copy the
contacts from this second Person Folder into the main Contacts folder. At
that point, I have the same problem as before with Outlook taking over the
CPU.

Unfortunately, I need the contacts in the main Contact folder so that I can
link to my Treo. The set-up works perfectly on my other computer, but not
here. Any help would be very much appreciated, as I've already spent about
16 hours trying different things to get this to work. Thanks!!!

Have you checked for any corrupt or damaged Contacts in the Folder before
you moved them? Are you certain you exited Outlook completely before you
copied the PST file?

Very odd. I've never seen anything like it. Are you sure the destination PST
file has no errors? How many Contacts in the default folder? What happens if
you create a new PST and try to copy the Contacts into it?

According to scanpst.exe, both my overall Personal Folder, as well as the
one
containing the Contacts, are fine. Is there another way to check?

I can now even get to the point where the Contacts are ok and do not hang
my
computer if they are in a sub-folder of the main Contacts folder
(Contacts,
with "+" next to it, that when opened leads to another "Contacts").

However, as soon as I try to cut, copy, move to folder, or copy to folder
to
get them into the main Contact folder, Outlook starts cycling the CPU.
Once
this happens, as soon as I delete them from the main Contacts folder, all
problems stop.

This is driving me crazy!!! Thank you for your help!

The only thing I see that is unique to your circumstance is having a default
Contact Folder with 0 Contacts. No one uses Outlook that way, nor was it
designed for that scenario. If you use Outlook conventionally, does the
problem persist?

I agree, it is odd. I have a total of about 260 contacts, but all are in a
sub-folder under Contacts, default Contacts has 0 contacts in it.

I've tried re-installing Outlook several times. I've tried setting up a
new
PST several times. Either way, I end up with the same results - Outlook
takes over my CPU when contacts are placed in the default Contacts folder.

I've run scanpst.exe on both the destination and source, and it reports
back
no errors on both. Is there another way to determine if there are any
errors
on either the source or destination? I have the same build of Outlook and
set of contacts on my desktop and it runs without issue.

Worst case, I'll leave all of my contacts in a sub-folder of the Contacts
folder, but that seems sort of silly. Russ, thank you for your help and
insight... I'm still hoping we can come up with something that works!

Just so that you do not feel all alone: the same thing has happened to
me. Twice actually. I bought a HP laptop, copied in my old PST, the CPU
started cycling. Tried the same things you did.

Problem is with both Contacts and Calendar in the Default Folders.

Even if I simply add in a few contacts and appointments to a new, empty
PST, the problem starts (cycling to abouit 10% with 20 of either).

I had to take the HP back and bought a Dell 640m. Exactly the same
thing.

Could it be a Dual Core thing?
Agreed - that's the problem! As soon as I put contacts into the default
Contacts folder, Outlook begins cycling the CPU. Putting my contacts in a
sub-folder of the default Contacts has been the only way I've been able to
work around the problem.

I just tried starting over again with a fresh PST and opened my Contacts PST
file from my other machine. As soon as I copied them into the default
Contacts folder of the fresh PST (no other files in the entire thing), the
CPU began its cycling (60% of my new T7200 dual core CPU every 10 seconds).
As soon as I delete the contacts from the default folder, it stops.

I wish I knew why this was happening!

I am also having the same issue. I feel like it has something to do
with the import of the .pst. I just got a brand new Dell XPS M1210,
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor. I exported mail, contacts and calendar to
pst files from my old computer, the imported to the new one. About
half way through, it just about froze up. I had to force quit Outlook,
uninstall, delete the pst files, reinstall and then I only imported my
mail folders. I used my blackberry to import the contacts and calendar
items. However, now it is just slow--unacceptably slow. Other apps
(Photoshop included!) are lighting fast. Any luck on figuring out a
solution?

Never export to or import from a PST. There's no need and you lose data.
Other problems can occur as well, including the corruption of the mail
profile. Just open the PST in Outlook with FIle>open>Outlook Data File.
