Outlook 2003 SP3 Error

"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook."
I decided to take the plunge today and catch up on Windows Update items to
include IE8, and Windows Live with the connector option. After the updates I
started getting the above message when I try to create a new email or look at
my "Email Accounts".
I uninstalled IE8 and Windows live and the problem persists.
I repaired Outlook and the problem persists.
I reinstalled Outlook and the problem persists.
I checked and all updates for Outlook 2003 have been installed.
I noticed that the Windows Live connector account for my hotmail address is
still in my folder list. I think this may somehow be related to the problem
but I don't know how to solve it.
Anyone have any ideas?

Use the mail applet in the control panel to create a new mail profile.
(Don't copy the existing mail profile. Create a new one that uses your
existing .PST.)

Creating a new mail profile took care of the problem. But there were then 2
sets of Personal Folders showing. I moved all of my old emails from the
second to the first and then closed the second Personal Folders set which
appeared to delete it since it was then empty. Thanks for the help.

Do you have any idea why this happened?

That should not have happened. You should have simply pointed the new profile
at the old PST and removed the empty one all in the Mail applet prior to
starting Outlook.

I don't know what should and should not happen; I just know what did.
I created the new profile and don't think I even pointed at the old pst.
When I opened Outlook all of my personal folders were empty. After a while I
realized there were two sets of personal folders so I moved my old email
folders and closed the old one. But I forgot to do the Contacts so I
imported them from the old pst. Everything seems to be OK now but I have no
idea why this happened. It does irritate me that I have been a proponent for
keeping up on Microsoft updates with people afraid to do it for just this
reason. I won't be trying IE8 or Windows Live again anytime soon. There are
probably no features I need anyway.

If this were to happen to me, I'd start over with a clean profile and simply
reuse the original PST.
