Outlook 2003 Spelling Check, Plain text vs HTML or Rich text

Hoping for an answer, thanks in advance. I'm wondering if Outlook (using Word
2003 as an editor and spelling checking with custom.dic) checks for obvious
errors like "thsi is a tesst" in HTML or Rich text settings. Only if the
setting is Plain text does it underline errors in that test sentence, in HTML
or Rich text nothing is corrected or underlined as an error. I renamed the
original custom.dic to custom.old and recreated a blank custom.dic as a
precaution. Does only Plain text settings identify spelling errors? Thanks
