Outlook 2003 task problems - assignee cannot open

K

Keith

Anyone aware of problems assigning tasks (Outlook 2003) where assignee cannot
open the task, and when tasks are updated, the original sender receives the
update but it remains in the inbox (does not update the original task).

Yes, it's a known problem apparently related to the January 10 security update for Outlook. The only current workaround is to remove that update.

Thanks - the only problem is that we've been having this problem since late
December 2005? Could it be related to other previous security updates as well?

Please log the error directly with Microsoft so that they can gather more
data about who's having it and in what circumstances.

I finally bit the bullett and rang microsoft about this. Much discussion with
Tech Support (at no cost to me as they seemed to accept it wasn't a user
problem) reveled two items of note:

1. MS had no idea this problem existed as it appeared no-one had reported
it. They are now aware of the problem and I told them to referr to these
discussion groups if they didnt believe me or thought I was the only person
with this problem.

2. The tech I spoke to did acknowledge it was a serious problem and
undertook to send the reference up the line for the developers to look at.

They did not reccommend uninstalling any security updates. This would leave
systems vulnerable and it appears from the lates posts that more recent
updates may also be causing problems (is this latest one a cumilative
update?).

I would urge erveryone with this problem to contact MS tech support ASAP and
notify them of this problem. At the time I called they had not heard of this
issue at all (I can't believ that there is no-one in MS that monitors the
groups for this sort of thing). Until they realise how big and widespread the
problem is, I doubt they will give it the attention it requires.

Has there been any update on this issue from Microsoft? I have removed the
Security Update KB892843 but the problem continues. I guess fixing disabled
functionality is not important enough for Microsoft to address in a timely
manner!

Same here. Removing KB892843 did not fix the problem. My assigned
tasks still can not be opened and my boss insists that I have to use it
for my projects... wah!!!

We have the same problem here at our offices. We can Assign (and assignee can
accept) OK, but when completed, it only generates an email, and does not flag
as complete.

This used to work fine.... *&$%
Another thread here indicated that MS was aware and would address this in
SP3, whenever that might be.

What would be the best way to notify Microsoft (it does not generate an
error...)

<argh! Assigned Tasks!>

I've followed Sue's advice, but found that you also need to hide the update,
else Autoupdate will just load the patch again. Uninstall all Outlook 2003
Security Updates (you may leave the Junk Email updates). Next, use Microsoft
Update, Custom and uncheck the Outlook updates while checking the 'no, don't
bug me about this again until you fix it, you software engineers, you' box.
After you've removed the Outlook 2003 Security patches, the user will be able
to accept NEW tasks. I've found/seen nothing to assist with opening the old
tasks. <sob> Tagging a task with a follow up flag will allow a user to have
some tracking. If you want to see the task, you'll have to use the preview
pane.

Tree, really pretty annoyed

Another recent Security Update produces the same problem. You need to
uninstall KB913807 as well.

I am having the same problem. Whatever it is seems to be in multiple
updates. I finally uninstalled all outlook 2003 updates and the problem went
away for new incomming task assignments.

I check this hot fix and it appears to be a hotfix for the Japanese version
of Outlook. Should this be used on the English version?

I've read all the posts on this and have good news. Having already resigned
myself to deleting the offending update and waiting for MS to release the
real fix before updating Office I took one of the responders advise and
contacted MS just to let them know there are more folks suffering the same
fate.

Much to my surprise they had a solution. There is a hotfix that works for
me: Solution: Install Hotfix KB915490. The hotfix is not publically availabe
becasue MS hasn't finished testing it. If you are interested contact MS
again. I was working with Maggie Guo (CS&S) [[email protected]]. The
hotfix will be placed in a password protected file so you need to request it
to get it.

Good Luck.

I have read all the posts on this topic. I have a similar problem but not
exactly the same as Keith described.

In my job I create all the Tasks and assign them to others (office 2003) I
receive update emails from the assignee but they are not updated in my
Calender Taskpad. If I click on the task I only get the original Task that I
created and there is a message saying something like "WAITING FOR A RESPONSE
FROM RECIPIENT"

I believe this started after downloading all the updates and patches from
Microsoft Office update site. Does anyone know for certain which downloads
need to be deleted. Someone also mentioned a permanant fix in SP3 - when is
this due

Has this been fixed yet please? I am also experiencing the same problems in
our office and we use assigning of tasks constantly.... well not so much
lately with the given problems. We rely so much on the assigning of tasks.

Outlook SP3 apparently solves this issue....I had the same problem, installed
SP3 this month and it's all good now
