Outlook 2003 unwanted message downloading

For the past two weeks my Outlook 2003 has been has been downloading ALL
messages from the server every time I log on.
Also, the appication occasionally downloads the same message twice, when it
is being refreshed.
This glitch is becoming quite annoying since I have to delete an average of
400 messages every time I access Outlook.
I do realize that I can delete these messages at the source (from the
server), but I prefer not to resort to this.
