Hi, Sheila©,

Do you have an error message that occurs on any or all of those updates?

Have you tried installing the updates individually manually?

S

Sheila©

I have tried to install them seperately but still says it fails and I don't
get any error messages.... VERY ODD!!

S

I am trying the AUTOMATIC UPDATES again..

OK it Intializes the installation..
they all FAILED again.. 11:30 am. and no error report.

I am also having the identical problem with the same updates. I tried
everything in the troubleshooting section and nothing has worked...have tried
installing individually as well as all three together. Any information???'

Hi, Sheila©,

Thanks for posting back. How do you know they are failing if there is not
any error? Does the installation just stop or hang?

Some do get only the message "Installation Failed" with no error or explanation. I found the following below that corrects this update issue for most.

1st Rename Office subkeys

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.

1. Close all the applications.
2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
and click Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select “Reinstall and Repair” and click Next.
7. Select “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation”.
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Updates

Hi Susan - If Sheila's installs are failing the same as mine, I get no
specific error message...it just says "failed" after each attempt to install
the update.

Thank you Peter , this worked for me, and I tried a lot of other solutions.

Thanks Peter - this worked perfectly. The only "step" that seemed to be
missing was that during the reinstall it never asked for my Office CD. Oh
well, worked great. Thanks so much!

I was going crazy trying to find a fix and was getting ready to spend money
on a support call to get the update to work when I saw this posting. I don't
know why this is not posted in support as a way to try the update solution.
Anyway, it worked and all is well!
Thanks!!!!

YW and thanks for posting back

Hi, Peter,

Yes, I knew of the "Installation Failed" message; lots of people see that,
but the OP didn't mention seeing that specific message. As you know, quite
often that is resolved with the steps in this article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304498/en-us

The fix you posted is fantastic; have you suggested it be added to the above
article? Sounds like it's more useful than some of the other suggestions in
the article.

Thanks--

Peter,

Thanks for finally coming up with a working solution to this. I've been
dealing with this for months and the Knowledge Base has been useless. I did
have some strange error message when I tried reinstalling and repairing
Office. It claimed I was missing a .cab file in the MSOCache. I cancelled the
install but tried the updates anyway and they worked. It seems renaming the
registry keys was the thing. Also, it didn't recognize the Calendar Views
Add-on but I don' t realy need that. I'm mostly just glad to see that update
icon go away for the first time since January. Thanks!
