Outlook (2003) Window closes when I close an email - why?

My PC had to be re-configured and all my settings were lost. I now have a
problem with Outlook (2003) as whenever I close an email the whole Outlook
window shuts. It's obviously a rogue setting somehwere but I don't know
where to look anymore, and it's really annoying to have to keep re-opening
Outlook.

Also, it used to display a small envelope icon in the bottom toolbar when
new mail came in - this has vanished now as well.

Can anyone help please?

Right-click the Outlook icon in the system tray and uncheck Hide When
Minimized, if it's checked.

Click Tools>Options>E-mail Options>Advanced E-mail Options and make sure
"Show an envelope icon in the notification area" is checked.
