Outlook 2003 XML and SRS Files Query

My understading of these files were that the SRS file contains Send and
Receive Settings and the XML file contains Outlook Viewing settings. However
it would seem that when I recently deleted my SRS file, I lost all my view
settings despite my XML file being intact.

Does anyone know if there's a way that I can preserve my settings in this
scenario? Unfortunately a read-only SRS file doesn't work as my settings are
then not saved on exit.
