Outlook 2003

P

PaulJB

Recently I installed Office 2007 and after realising most organisations still
use Office 2003 (and all of it's constituent components)

I tried to install Office 2003 before installing 2007 and now Outlook will
not start.

It tries to start (Frames etc. display but are not accessible) before going
to the "Outlook has experienced a problem and needs to close" standard error
message then when trying to restart Outlook in "Safe Mode" The error message
(after it again tries to start reads "Unable to open the Outlook window. The
set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact your
administrator if the problem persists"

The copy of Office is my own and is legal and I use it as a stand alone
program not linked to a network.

I suspect it is something to do with the MAPI file but do not know enough
about it to fix it.

Please, please can someone help?

Uninstall any Office 2003 components, then the Office 2007 components.
Reboot and install the Office 2003 suite. Find MAPI32.dll and rename it to
..old. Open Outlook and it should do a Detect and Repair.

If this does not work, report back the error you get. (You may need to
rename MSMAPI32.dll if it still exists as well.)

BTW since Office 2007 can save files in old format it should'nt make any
difference, or cause difficulties with peoples using 2003

Hi Milly thanks for your help,

I renamed both the MAPI and the MSMAPI files and I still get the same
problem, I did get an additional error message when I rebooted saying
Search.EXE cannot locate MAPI.DLL before I do anything.

Have completely uninstalled 2007 and 2003 and re-installed 2003 with no joy

Any other suggestions?

Thanks DL

Yes, I am aware that 2007can save files in "Save as" as 2003 versions.

The main reason is that I will be contracting to a company that uses the
2003 version and I will be using those files more often so even though I
personally prefer 2007 it makes more sense for me to revert to 2003.

Still having the MAPI issues though

Was the above error message before you uninstalled both 2003 and 2007 or was it
after

Then with Outlook closed, find and run fixmapi.exe to see if you can get
Outlook to behave. I also hope you meant that you renamed MSMAPI32.dll, not
MSMAPI.dll. The 32 part is essential.
