Outlook 2007 acting bizarre

I recently returned from holiday so hadn't used my Outlook 2007 for awhile. Now, however, I'm back but Outlook seems to have gone haywire. When I click on a message subject, it opens the message rather than simply selects the message as it used to do.

I am not having trouble with other applications so can't figure out what is going on.
