Outlook 2007: Archive option I can't understand?

I'm having trouble understanding this option in the Outlook 2007
Archive default settings (Vista):

During AutoArchive:
"Delete expired items (email folders only)"

I've looked at the help and support explanations, and I can't tell if
the default is checked or not.

My real question is why would I want to delete an expired item? I
just want older emails to be moved to the Archive.pst corresponding
folder. (I assume move implies deleting from source after moving to
target.)

I can't understand when this option would ever be used, unless it is
saying that INSTEAD of archiving, delete the messages.

Could someone clear up my misunderstanding?

That's exactly what it means. Some people don't want to save expired items
in their archive folders. Instead, they just want to delete them because the
information is obsolete, i.e. no longer useful. That's what that option
does.

Thanks for confirming that. Am I also correct in stating that if I
manually move a group of emails from for example my outlook Client
folder to my archive Client folder, I am in effect accomplishing the
same thing as archiving using the automatic mode?

I often want to select and choose was in not current, but I still want
to save (archive) some emails.

Yes, you can move items manually into the archive .pst file whenever you want
to.

Are your older items marked with an Expire date? If not, this setting won't
affect you when autoarchive runs. When an expiration date is set and has
passed, they are shown in the mailbox with a grey strike-through font.

No they're not. They're just a few months old. My threshold is
currently set at 9 months because I didn't want something happening
that I didn't anticipate.

lot of nice options.
