Outlook 2007 Beta broken by latest security patches

J

Jaudist

OL2007 refused to load after the August security updates had been applied to
my PC. It complained of a corrupt or incompatible MAPI32.DLL. I ran Setup
again and selected the Repair option but this did not work, nor did the
Reinstall option, so I tried to uninstall the Beta but this too failed.

I had to use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the 2007 Beta
registry entries, then delete the MSOCache and the folder where the 2007 Beta
had been installed.

Office 2003 also had to be removed and reinstalled as Outlook 2003 also
wouldn't load and again all attelpts to repair or reinstall Office 2003 via
Setup failed.

I haven't loaded Office 2007 Beta again!

Be warned...

All works fine here - for the MAPI32.dll problem, all you had to do was
rename it and run fixmapi.exe.

Thanks for your comments.

I skipped all the other solutions I tried, which included yours; the actions
you suggested didn't work for me. I was very keen to avoid a total uninstall
and re-install, belive me, even though I wasn't evaluating the beta on a PC
that mattered (of course).

If there had been really compelling reasons to continue evaluating Office
2007 I would have re-installed it. At present Outlook 2007 has too many
rough edges and features I take for granted in Outlook 2003 are currently
missing, which is odd in a late beta. Similarly, the Word 2007 makeover had
left me searching, almost in vain sometimes, for features that I could access
readily in the menus of Word 2003. When I did find them I could see no
logical reason for their new locations.

Much has been written about the supposed benefits of the new contextual
look, but on my limited experience so far, I will not be upgrading my
business.

I am sure the shipping version will be better, it has to be.

Which features are missing in Outlook 2007?

The new ribbon UI definitely takes some time to get used to.

I meant to write 'Office' rather than 'Outlook'.

In OL2007 I can't empty my junk e-mail folder by right clicking on it.
Nothing happens. After sending an e-mail if I click on Sent Items, that
e-mail is not highlighted; the one below is. That's perhaps a bug rather
than a feature loss.

In Word 2007 the AutoFormat and Autotext features have gone, leaving their
functionality to AutoCorrect. The installation did not pick up my previous
custom entries and I have had to enter them again.

Also in Word 2007 there is no apparent way of customising the ribbons. I
can only add icons to the Quick Access toolbar, whereas in Word 2003 I can
put them anywhere I like. Interestingly, the custom changes I had made to my
Word 2003 toolbars were picked up by the installation and placed in the
approriate ribbons.

Similarly, when I open a document that contains macros, any custom icons I
have associated to appear only with that document, to run the embedded
macros, don't appear either in a ribbon or the toolbar. As yet I haven't
worked out how to solve that.

Let's nevertheless remember it is a beta and trust that the final version
doesn't force users to work in a different way just because the UI has
evolved.

Not quite sure what you are describing as issue here.
In Word 2007 the AutoFormat and Autotext features have gone, leaving their
functionality to AutoCorrect. The installation did not pick up my previous
custom entries and I have had to enter them again.
AutoText is now called QuickParts. You can find QuickParts on the Insert
Tab, Text group. For more information about this feature (and how it
works), search the Word newsgroup for the term and look at posts from
Beth Melton.
Also in Word 2007 there is no apparent way of customising the ribbons. I
By design. The ribbon is out of the box not customizable at all. For a
discussion of why and an alpha version of an add-in that gives you this
functionality back, see the blog on my website.

Did you check the add-ins tab? That's where all legacy (read non 2007)
macros, etc get to place their icons.

Welcome to Office 2007. It does force users to relearn how they work,
because the UI changed radically. It didn't just evolve.

Take a look at my blog and also read Jensen Harris UI blog. Both should
give you a good introduction to the new UI and what it means for
customization.

Thanks for your comments.

I have now had time to look at your blog and Jensen Harris's UI blog. It is
clear to me that there are some powerful arguments against the limited
customization policy that Microsoft has adopted. As I am not a developer it
is not going to be possible for me to adapt Office 2007 to my needs unless
Microsoft do eventually offer some simple tools, or I rely on third party
add-ins, such as yours.

You were right of course about the beta install not picking up my 2003
customized toolbar, by coincidence the Font ribbon happened to reflect my
non-standard 2003 formatting bar exactly, hence my assumption.

I haven't solved the issue with my macros and icons, which in fact do not
appear in the add-ins tab as you suggested.

My evaluation of the beta now only progresses sporadically at home, I
haven't re-installed on my office evaluation PC, so I will sit it out until
the final version ships.

I have found a couple of other issues in Word; the Vertical Page Position
feature doesn't update properly and all documents are printed from the
default tray of my printer regardless of which tray I select via the printer
properties from the Print dialog box.
