option is greyed out when i right-click the attachment looking for a "remove

You must open the item first. You can't remove attachments while looking at items in the reading pane.

What do you mean open the item first? If i get an email with an attachment, i
open the email, click on the icon for the attachment and get some kind of
previewing pane. I can't delete the attachment from this view either. if i
double-click on the attachment, i am prompted to open or save the atchment or
cancel the opperation. i want to completely remove the attachment from the
email (and i'm assuming from wherever it is stored on my hard drive). Why is
this so difficult? It seems that this would be a fairly standard operatioin
and should be much easier.

Open = "open the item in its own window" by double-clicking it. Open the item, not the attachment.

aha, i see that you have to double-click the message to have it open in its
own window to be able to remove the attachment. thank you for steering me in
that direction. however, it takes a lot of time to open old emails 1 by 1 to
remove attachments. it would be very helpful if i could remove the
attachments from the different previews.
