Outlook 2007 Contact list/ address book

I have just had my hard drive replaced. I backed up outlook files, only to
find my address book completely empty.

I had lost over 243 addresses to my horror. After doing some searching I
found them in my contacts list. But I am unable to transfer them to my
'empty' address book

Can anyone help me? How do I do it? I don't want to have to manually add
one at a time to the address book.

The addressbook is only a view of your contacts.
There are many reasons why your contacts don't appear in the Addressbook
view.

Check that the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

As you are using Outlook 2007 you'll need to
make a new profile as you can't add the Outlook Address Book service due to
a bug.

I have run into an identical problem twice, and have not found a meaningful
solution in any boards. The contacts were backed up, transferred, and
imported to a new computer. The contacts are present, but the contact info
cannot be accessed from a new email message. I assume that by "make a new
profile" you're saying that the user should start from scratch and manually
enter the contacts into a new mail account? This isn't a solution.

If you have Contacts in the Contacts folder but they are not accessible when
you click on the To button, check these settings:

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book is checked?

If this is grayed out...

Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change existing directories or
address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present? If it isn't listed, add
it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed, then remove it and close
then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add it.

If you are using Outlook 2007 and the the checkbox is grayed, you'll need to
make a new profile as you can't add the Outlook Address Book service due to
a bug.

Not at all.
Firstly this is one of the major problems seen when a pst file is imported.
NEVER use the import function to move data from one Outlook to another.
Secondly, you do not have to re-enter all your contacts. It's the PROFILE
that is corrupted by the import process, NOT the pst file.
Create a new profile as instructed, and add the existing pst file to it. No
need to re-type anything.

It is likely that your problem stems from importing. Export/import is never
the way to trasnfer data from one Outlook instance to another.
