Outlook 2007 crashes right away

Every time I try to open Outlook 2007, it crashes. "Outlook has ancountered
an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It happens a few seconds into opening Outlook, when the "Server Status" at
the bottom right says "Send/Receive Status 55%". I am running Windows XP
home with the service pack. I have had no serious Outlook issues for months.
2 months ago, my husband got an ipod, and we have been syncing calendars and
contacts though iTunes. I also sync Outlook to my Windows Mobile 6 device
using Activesync.

I am not sure if this is relevant, but I was getting two errors, but I fixed
the Data error by running the scanpst utility. I have used the "Add/Remove"
to try to repair Outlook, but the error is still there. I cannot get in to
Outlook to change any send/receive settings, which I think might be the
problem?

I've googled this problem everywhere and cannot find an answer. I am
concerned that uninstalling/reinstalling Outlook will cause loss of data.
Any help will be so appreciated!

I forgot to mention I checked the event viewer, the event ID is 7001.
Microsoft support site has no documents which mention this code. On another
forum, someone mentioned that disabling anti-virus email scan would fix it,
but I tried that and Outlook still closes after a few seconds every single
time I try to open it.

Does Outlook open using the safe switch?
Run
Outlook.exe /safe (note space between exe /)

No, safe mode opens, but "encountered an error and needs to close" box
appears after a few seconds, just like in regular mode.

I'll assume you have run Office Diagnostics, using the Office cd?
If so, Control Panel<Mail applet, create a new Profile, add a new data file,
add the accounts & test them
Does OL now function?
Assuming yes, within OL, File>Open>Data File........open your old data file,
probably named outlook.pst, within OL tree view copy data from old set of
Personal Folders to the new set, when completed close the old set

No, I don't have the full office suite, just Outlook 2007 with SP1. I bought
it online without a CD, just the paid download upgrade from a trial version.
I'll see if I can locate the diagnostic from what I received when I purchased
it.

I'll look for that and try the new mail profiles.

But then you burned that installation kit to a CD, correct? If not, you're
asking for trouble if you ever have to reinstall due to a hard drive crash.

Open Control Panel's Add Programs and repair from there.

There is no trial version of only Outlook 2007 available from MS
If you didnt order the cd, or keep a backup up of any installation file, you
are on a path to deap do do.

Sorry, I was confused on a number of points.
1. I had a trial version of Office Suite, which I had downloaded. When I
converted to purchase Outlook only, I did order and receive an official
Microsoft install CD, which I had forgotten. The bright yellow box above my
monitor should have been a clue...
2: I was able to access Office Diagnostics in the Outlook Help tab in the
few seconds while the program was opening, before I got the "encountered an
error and needs to close" box.

Office Diagnostics said there were 8 updates I needed, I followed
instructions, downloaded and installed and rebooted. Office Diagnostics
detected no other problems.

Outlook still crashes a few seconds in.

I will try the mail profile fix next.

If you had a trial version of Office, then uninstall any Trial Version
together with any other version of Office 2007 listed in add/remove
dialogue, including any activation assistant
Reboot your PC, run disk cleanup to remove temp files
Instal Office 2007 from dvd
