Outlook 2007 crashes when adding a contact

Mike

We have 1 installation of Outlook that always crashes when adding in a
contact. But it seems to only crash when a PHONE number is added in.
I've seen 1 or 2 posts with this problem, but no fix so I'm hoping I
have better luck here.

Anyone with ideas? The other person has the problem with SP1, I'm
running without SP1 but will be updating it to SP1 soon, however I
doubt it will fix the problem.

Hi Mike, Experiencing the same problem myself - on only one user who has a
Lenovo tablet PC running Vista Ultimate with Outlook 2007 linked to SBS 2003
on the server. When saving (or updating) a contact it hangs if (and only if)
a phone number is being entered (or an existing one being changed). Contact
details are saved if no phone number information is entered - and we
experimented to see if the format of the phone number was important (eg using
+prefix / international codes / spaces etc) without success.

Two (unlikely?) suggestions we've not yet worked through are (1) permission
conflicts and (2) AV conflicts (we're running Kaspersky on the laptop and
Trend on the server)?

So any ideas would be most appreciated?

Regards

Normally I would not spend so much time in diagnosing an issue such as this, but I simply have found this issue too intriguing. Also there is a growing large amount of people with this same UNSOLVED issue. Using sysinternal's process monitor I was able to stack trace the creation of a contact through to tapi32.dll. this file is apart of the Windows Telephony Service.

I was able to stop outlook from crashing completely by simply pausing the telephony service while creating a new contact!

On Monday I will attempt to create a fix for this issue, perhaps by re-registering all the telephony service dlls. I will post this fix soon as I come up with something that works.

Either way we now know the culprit for this problem is the telephony service, no doubt about that.

AND... what is the problem in the first place?

Having the same problem here, Outlook 2007 crashes whenever I try to add or modify a contact's phone number. This didn't use to happen so my guess is that it's been introduced by some automatic update that occurred at some point. At the moment I'm not running any active virus or spyware software so that isn't causing it. I just tried installing the Office 2007 service back and it didn't help. I'm running Windows XP SP2 for the record.

Has anyone found a fix for this issue?
I have Window XP SP2, Office 2003 SP3 on Exchange 2003.
When entering a phone number in contacts, when Outlook tries to format the number is when it crashes.
It is not a NT profile issue as it happens to all that is logged on.
Reinstalling Office and system file checker did not help.
Doing an in-place upgrade of Windows XP now but it is taking a long time to complete.
Maybe I should have re imaged the pc instead, which would have save time :?

I have the same problem here, for the dates it seems like a recent issue
maybe caused by an update. If anybody has a solution please share it, this is
driving me nuts

Hi all

We have been having the same problem for about six month now, it came on
AFTER an update.
No one seems to have the answer, We are now using a different client contact
data base.
