Outlook 2007(?) crashing when attaching file(s)

I am trying to troubleshoot/fix a client's Outlook. THe problem is that,
inconsistently, Outlook will hang/crash when trying to attach a file. It does
not matter what type of file, where the file is located, or if it is a new
composition, reply or forward. Sometime it does it when outlook is first
started, after it's been up & open for 30-60 min. or after being on & used
for the whole day. I have already run the "Diagnostics" included with
Outlook, in & out of safe mode. Reinstalled over current installation.
Recreated a new profile, tested with another email server also.

OS: Vista Home
Mail: Outlook 2007(I think)

Does the user have any network drives mapped? That can cause slowness when
the file browser is opened.

No, there are no mapped drives connected to this computer nor the network it
is on. To clarify things, Outlook needs to be shutdown through Task Manager,
and no matter how long we wait (30 min.- 4 hrs.) it has not recovered.
