Outlook 2007 "data file did not close properly" error

Since I switched from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2007, this error ("A
data file did not close properly the last time it was used and is
being checked for problems. Performance might be affected while the
check is in progress") pops up from frequently. Performance drags for
about 20 minutes while the check completes.

Details:

I use Microsoft Exchange, but I have a separate offline folder
(a .PST) where I drag messages that I'm not working on. It is the PST
file that is cited as the problem in an error message. The PST is
about 1.5 G.

Running scanpst reports "minor" errors, but repairing them doesn't
have any lasting benefit.

I do not have my Anti-Virus (Symantec) configured to process email.

I run Google Desktop.

Shutting down the system is not necessary to trigger the problem. Just
ending Outlook and starting it back up an hour later will cause it.

Generally OUTLOOK.EXE disappears from the Task list when I shut
Outlook down.

I don't have any third party Outlook plug ins.

My next step is to create a brand new Outlook 2007 format PST file and
drag all the folders over. With 1.5G of data, this will take a while.
