Outlook 2007 Disable "Recover Deleted Items" in the UI

We would like to block access to the "Recover Deleted Items" option under
Tools. We would like to do this by Group Policy. The following article
explains how to do this in Outlook 2003, but the instructions don't match up
w/ 2007.

I've loaded the outlook12 adm file. The "disable items in the user
interface" option doesn't have a "custom" option.

Any thoughts?

Okay, I've looked all over for it in Exchange and can't find it. Can you
point me there?

Deleted Item Retention is set to 7 days by default. Personally I've changed
mine to one month, it has saved me doing mailbox recoveries.

Open the Exchange Management Console.

In the console tree, expand Microsoft Exchange, then expand Server
Configuration, and then select Mailbox.

On the Database Management tab in the work pane, expand the storage group
that contains the mailbox database that you want to configure.

Right-click the database that you want to configure, and then select
Properties.

Click the Limits tab.

In the Deletion settings area, enter the number of days to retain deleted
items in Keep deleted item for (days).

Click OK to save the changes.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Kathleen. We have ours set to 90 days.

I would like to keep it at that because I want to be able to restore 3
months of items from the dumpster if I do an Exmerge on a mailbox.

Our users are using the "recover deleted items" option in Outlook to go in
and delete items out of the dumpster. At that point I can't recover them and
since they do it throughout the day, restoring a users mailbox will not bring
them back.

In Outlook you can go to: Tools -> Trust Center -> Add-ins -> Manage:
Exchange Client Extension. In that box you can uncheck "Deleted Item
Recover". This removes "Recover Deleted Items" from the users Tools menu.
Now I need to figure out how to push out that setting change globally.

You should be able to override that in ADUC. There's also the
DumpsterAlwaysOn potential to research as well.

Let me know what ends up working best for you.

Kathleen - Were you able to find a fix to prevent Deletion of items in deleted items recovery for Office 2007 clients? We are facing the same issue and don't see any help on the web. Thanks!
