Outlook 2007 doesn't refresh Inbox to show new messages for POP3

Outlook 2007 fails to refresh the inbox view to show new messages
after they arrive. I always leave the inbox open and in Outlook 2003
and earlier versions of Outlook 2007 (I am now running the retail
release) this was not an issue, but now it will not display the new
messages unless I first select a different folder in the navigation
pane and then click back on the inbox. This is very weird and very
annoying when I receive many messages a day. Could this be just a
problem with my computer or is this a common behavior for all users?
Are there any suggested fixes?

It's not a common issue. If you ahve a virus scanner that integrates with
Outlook disable this integration and try again.
If you did an upgrade of Outlook locate extend.dat and outcmd.dat and rename
them to .old.
In addition I would recommend recreating your mail profile;

I have the same problem, I read a lot of complaints about this issue on this
board. I have not seen a fix that works for me. I have all POP3 accounts
going to INBOX. I upgraded to Outlook 2007 from 2003. I recreated a new
profile, download the KB patches and even tried the clear filters suggestion
some one mafe (although I had none). I have even added Outlook.exe to the
trusted programs of Norton (Permit ALL).

When I receive a new email, I get Inbox (1) on the left, but nothing in the
Inbox pane. I have to click on another folder and come back to Inbox to see
it in the pane.

So very frustrating to upgrade and not get what you expect.

I have the same problem although occasionally Outlook displays the new
message in the inbox without my having to click to another box and back
again. Sometimes notifications such as the tone and pop-up work but rarely.
I haven't found an answer yet and nothing on the forums so far.

I've upgraded to Outlook 2007 from Outlook 2003. I had Google Desktop Search
already installed on my Windows XP SP2 machine before the upgrade. Afterward,
I noticed that when i recieved a new message, the Inbox would show Inbox (2)
to indicate two new messages. However, the right view pane would not refresh
to show the new messages. I would have to click on another folder and click
back to inbox to see the new messages. I've been playing with this for a
couple of days.

I found an "outlook.exe /safe" switch that opens outlook in "safe"
mode. According to Microsoft KB web site safe mode will "disable all
add-ins or extensions that will not start, or a corrupted resource, file,
registry, or templates."

I found that by starting outlook in safe mode, the inbox refresh problem
went away. So I started turning off add-in one by one. I found that if I
turned off the "Google Desktop Search Outlook Addin", then the issue went
away. I did this by the following:

Click on Tools and select Trust Center
Click on Add-ins

From the drop-down list at the bottom, select Exchange Client

Extensions - Click GO
Uncheck the "Google Desktop Search Outlook Addin" check box.

I've found that I can no longer "OPEN IN OUTLOOK" from teh google desktop
search results, but items are still indexed.

Your advice about disabling Google Desktop in Outlook Add-ins worked. For
two days I've had no problem with notifications in Outlook 2007. Hopefully
we put enough key works into this string that others can find it.

Unfortunately in my case this workaround did not work. It seems this is a
bigger issue. First of all, I built my computer from scratch so Outlook 2007
was not installed as an upgrade from 2003 (however I imported all content
from a pst file).
Second remark is that I do not have any antivirus software installed on my
computer.
I also have to say something that I did not see in any of the other comments
regarding this issue: in my case the audio/video notifications (beep,
semi-transparent window and change of cursor) are not raised either so is not
only the fact that messages are not displayed within the Inbox folder however
as all of you mentioned the number of new messages is displayed within Inbox.

At the point I noticed this strange behavior I did not really have to many
things installed on my computer because I installed it from scratch (here is
the sequence I installed them):
- Windows XP SP2
- SQL Server 2005 Developer + SP2
- MS Access 97
- MS Access 2000
- MS Access 2003
- Office 2007 (including Outlook 2007). After installation I imported my
data from my previous Outlook previously exported intop a pst file and I
configured my email accounts (all POP3 and one http).
- Business Contact Manager 2007 for Outlook
- Visual Studio 6

After installing VS6 I noticed first time the strange behavior however,
until that moment I did not check Outlook at all.

As I already mentioned I do not have any antivirus or anti-spyware program
installed (not even MS defender), I do not have Google Desktop Search or any
other such freeware program installed. However, I disabled all add-ins from
Outlook but behavior is still there.

I am a little concerned that this is not even yet considered a bug by
Microsoft.

This doesn't address the mail topic of the thread, but importing from a PST
is never appropriate. It causes corruption in the mail profile.

Maybe I was not explicit but I have the same problem in Outlook not having
refreshed the Inbox folder and I was specifying that disabling Google Destop
Search add-in did not fix my problem because I do not have this add-in
installed on my computer.
Regarding the import of a pst file, as long as Outlook allows you exporting

(including pst) I do not see why shouldn't I use it especially having in
view in Outlook 2003 I did it a lot of times (whenever I re-installed my

In my case this work around did not work because I did not have Google
Desktop Search installed. I also did not have Outlook 2007 installed as an
upgrade from 2003 but it was installed from scratch on a new computer.
However I tried disabling all other add-ins from Outlook but still did not
fix my issue with Inbox folder. Eventually re-running the Office setup and
chosing Repair sems it fixed (for now) this issue.

Because it loses data and corrupts your mail profile, that's why.

especially having in view in Outlook 2003 I did it a lot of times

After disabling virtually all of the COM add-ins in the Trust Center, OL07
began to work as it should - even improving the speed very significantly. By
gradually re-enabling each COM application, I discovered that SB4 was the
culprit. Of course, I closed down and restarted OL07 each time I added a COM
application back. Since I receive upwards of 50 spams/day, I wanted to see
if there was an option within SB4 that was contributing to the performance
hit. I discovered that the option to have SB4 check the Junk E-Mail folder
for spam was causing this problem. Disabling that option alone restored OL07
back to its "normal" operation.

Thanks BobTrudo et al! I have "unchecked" most of the Add-ins and speed has
improved drastically. I'll now begin to re-try them one by one to see where
the difficulty lies for my specific situation. Hurray.

I can't remember now which add-in it was I disabled, but an add-in turned out to be the culprit for me as well. I believe it was for Docsvault. That add-in also caused an issue in Excel 2007. Just thought I'd let everyone know the problem was resolved and that if something is not behaving well in Outlook, it's probably an add-in. If not an add-in, your pst is usually to blame - make a new profile. If not those two things, have fun, well 8o

Had same problem. Outlook 2007 Dutch with BCM. No refresh of inbox.
Problem caused by Norton Internet Security: firewall

Solution: deleted outlook-prgm from firewall list and started outlook again.
Norton-fw asked what to do with outlook: allow all (not auto).

Problem solved.
