Outlook 2007 - email not showing as read

M

Mike

I'll open an email, read it, close it, but it will show as being unread.
Repeating this process does not help, and once it happens I cannot even mark
a message as read. I've tried marking it as unread and the read again, but
the only way I've yet to find to correct this problem is to close & reopen
Outlook. This seems to happen the majority of the time when I first start
Outlook.

Any ideas on what's causing this and, if possible, how to correct it? TIA,

Mike

Had the same on of my machines. Creating a new profile, disabling
incompatible add-ins and renaming outcmd.dat and extend.dat to .old solved
it form me.

I'll try renaming the dat files, but it's not a big enough problem to create
a new profile; I know it's easy enough, but between the time involved and
issues I might have with my Palm, emails not showing up as read are pretty
low down on my priority list of concern :). The only add-in I had that's
not compatible is Motorola Phone Tools and I'd already disabled that (and
removed Lookout - I figured WDS will replace it anyway).

Thanks!

Okay....renaming outcmd.dat and extend.dat didn't help. I may try
uninstalling Motorola Phone tools completely, assuming I can find the
install file first ;).

Another oddity - I had four new emails. After reading them, they still
showed as unread - closed & reopened Outlook, marked them all as read -
three behaved as expected, but one still showed as unread. Closed & opened
Outlook again, and I was able to mark it as read.

I wonder where else this setting is controlled. If I find out anything I'll
post it here.

It's not a setting it's an incompatibility. Odd behavior is expected then.

Uninstalling Moto phone tools appeared to help at first, but I'm once again
having the same problem with messages not showing as being read. I just
opened my inbox, marked one email as read - worked okay. I did the same
thing with another email, and it still showed as being unread; close &
reopen Outlook and it's okay. Because of another issue (couldn't open
Outlook at all without it shutting down), I created a new profile - so I've
now deleted the dat files & created a new profile and am still having the
problem with read emails. Also - and this maybe related - Outlook 2003
allowed me to save HTML images after downloading them - 2007 will ask if I
want to save and then not allow me to; if I say 'yes' it creates a duplicate
email in my main inbox. Again, primarily a cosmetic issue, but annoying
nonetheless.

Another layer of oddness - if I right click on a folder and chose 'mark as
read', I *can* clear out my read message marks. Again, not the best
solution for marking a few messages as being read (and still doesn't fix the
underlying problem), but it is an option that doesn't involved closing &
restarting Outlook.

I may be talking to myself, but I think I finally found a cause and a
solution. If you open an email in the unread search folder (or mark it as
read), it doesn't want to mark it as read; once you have done this on any
email, no emails anywhere else will be marked as read. However - open in
email in any other folder, and they mark as unread. A bit disconcerting,
and I assume not what should be happening, but I can work around it in the
interim. I do think this has something to do with either my PST or profile
(though I created a new profile), since I don't appear to be having the same
problem at work.

Hi Mike,

Interesting observation. Can you try to give me some definite steps that
will always produce the issue for you (incl information what kind of
email account you have). I'll try to repro and then bug it.

Several things work better when I do not open email from the unread folder.
For example, I can save graphics from HTML emails (I could not before).

As for opening or making read emails in other folders - this does work.
However, if I open (or maks as read) email in the unread search folder, only
other emails in that particular folder can no longer be marked as read. Say
I have folders A, B and C. If I open an email from folder "B" in the unread
folder, only emails from this folder (not from A and C) will no longer mark
as read. Strange, I know.

Any idea what might be causing this?

I see this fairly regularly but I haven't found a pattern yet. Very often I
will right click->Mark a message as read. Sometimes, nothing happens.

Tonight, a group of messages wouldn't mark as read or unread via the right
click menu. I selected the group heading "Today" and mark as read, unread,
read... only the messages that had attachments were actually toggling?? I
know this isn't the pattern though, because it's not always messages with
attachments.

Right clicking in the folder tree on the left and marking all as read DOES
successfully mark the messages as read even when explicitly marking
individual messages did nothing.

Restarting Outlook restored the ability for me to mark those messages as
read/unread.

The only Add-Ins that are loaded are the Microsoft ones that came with the
outlook 2007 beta.

This is more of a post to say "I'm seeing this but I'm still trying to find
repro steps." Sorry I can't be of more help.
