Outlook 2007 Error 0x80040900 after installing KB937608 - The servername you entered can not be foun

Installing KB937608 apparently broke the send/receive functionality of
Outlook 2007 on my system. After installing the July updates the above
mentioned error popped up, and I could not send or receive mail via
Outlook. Outlook did not even really try to contact the mail servers, I
could see there was no network traffic at that moment. I use no firewall
software, and I had deactivated my anti-virus software.
I tried everything from creating a new .pst file, creating a new mail
profile in System Control (testing the account settings there worked
fine), repairing the Office installation, running the Office 2007
diagnostics - nothing helped. Uninstalling the updates didn't help
either. In the end I had to restore my OS and program partitions from a
backup image. Then I installed the updates one by one, testing Outlook
after each installation. No problems until I came to KB937608. Again, no
send/receive. Uninstalling the update didn't help either. So I restored
my backup image once again and installed all updates except KB937608 -
everything is fine. There must be something wrong with this update.
Maybe this will help others with the same problem.

I have exactly the same problem. I end up having to uninstall the Outlook
portion of the update. I have turned off automatic updates until there is a
resolution. PLEASE is there a solution out there somewhere?

Hi

I have the same problem. If I uninstall it though - my outlook 2007 is
working again.
This is the only update that gives me problems. Is there a way to tell
windows to totally ignore this update or is there a fix. Microsoft - Please
help.

Because my windows update settings are set to automatic - I need to
uninstall this update everyday to get to my mail.

Hope to hear from someone soon.

Hi,

I had the same error and I tried everything you mentionned but I was
unsuccesseful.

Then, I watched more closely my Windows firewall setting (whch was
unactivated).

Into the exceptions, I add ports 23 and 110 and in the advance tabs, I
uncheck the 2 connexion exceptions that where there (Connexion 1394 3
and Connexion to a local area)

Everything is working now

hi guys,
in spite of searching all places for the solution ...i could not ge
the answer for the problem...so tried as below & got through.....

1) first try to ping the Mail server from CMD........note the I
Address of the server....do this for both POP3 ? SMTP.
2) In the account settings of OL2007 put the noted IP's in place of th
mail server addresses......rest all remains same...

3) test your account by hitting "Test Account Settings" and you shoul
get through....

Enjoy.......
