Outlook 2007 hangs up when I respond to e-mails

Since installing Office 2007 (with Windows XP SP2) I have been plagued with
Outlook hanging up frequently which requires shutting down and reindexing on
being opened again. I noticed that the most common cause of the problem is
when I respond to e-mails. It also hangs up from time to time when I open
an e-mail, a calander entry or a task entry. I don't seem to encounter the
problem when I read e-mails through the reading pane. I have run diagnostic
tools but the problem still persists. Did anyone encounter this phenomenon?
Any ideas for resolving this?

I would try running "Office Diagnostics". Inside of Outlook, go to "Help >
Office Diagnostics" and follow the prompts. This might fix your problem.

Outside of that, I would check the event logs to see if anything shows up
(although I doubt it in this case). But to check, go to "Start > Run >
[type] eventvwr > OK".

Also, since you're running XP SP2, I would check to make sure you have
sufficient memory for Outlook. I know what the min. requirements might say,
but I would recommend at least 512MB, but 1 GB or more would be ideal.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I had run the "Office Diagnostics" from inside Outlook ... but the problem
persisted.

A check of the event logs simply does not reveal anything of particular
interest that could give a clue.

I believe your suggestion on memory size might be the clue - although the
Windows Task Manager shows that with Outlook running the Commit Charge is
about 700 Mb / 1224 Mb with about 1% - 10% CPU usage. But when Outlook hangs
the CPU usage shoots up to 100%.
