Outlook 2007 Inbox folder search

In Microsoft 2003, in outlook, I could click on the sort by "from" column to
sort emails by who they were from, in any folder (inbox, sent, etc). Then, I
could click a letter or number on the keyboard and it would go to the emails
starting with the letter or number that I clicked on. So in I have an email
from Steve Barry, I would click the from column to sort that field. Then I
would click the letter "B" on the keyboard. It would then automatically
scroll up to the first email starting with a "B".

In Microsoft 2007 outlook, I can do this in my sent items folder, but not in
my inbox. In the inbox folder I have to click on the "from" column, then
scroll to the letter. I know you can type in a name in the search block, but
this other method is easier to do, especially if you are not sure of the
name, it is also quicker. I can do this in the sent mail folder, but not the
inbox folder.

I have looked for settings, I have tried to re-order the columns, looked at
short cuts, but no luck. I even searched on line and found another person
with the same problem, however, no solution except to type in the name in the
search box at the top. To me, this isn't right, if I can sort then click the
required letter, it should work in all folders, not just sent mail.

Does anyone know how to make this work for the inbox folder, what settings
do I need to change?

Thanks
Liz

Hi Diane, I clicked on the row, I have the choice of Group by this Field and
Group by Box. Niether are selected. I tried various combinations with both
of them selected and not selected, closing outlook and starting it back up.
still no luck. I compared the customized view between inbox and sent mail.
both were the same.

You're using the single line view? Right click again and choose Customize -
hit the Reset button. if that doesn't work, click group button and uncheck
the option to automatically group. Also check in other settings - make sure
in cell editing is not enabled. (Type down will work with grouping - but
only to the first match.)

I did not have the option to reset, it was grayed out. However, I did notice
that I can sort by subject, hit a letter, and it will go to the first email
subject starting with that letter. So I thought the arrangement of the
columns from left to right had something to do with this, so I put the "from"
column to the right of the subject column, and it still did not work. It
only seems to be the "from" column, even the received. Only the subject
column in the inbox lets me sort like this. In the sent mail folder I can do
this by the "to" or "subject". Very strange.

I had the same problem and changed the view to View > Current View >
Messages with AutoPreview and the problem went away.
If I created my own view with View > Current View > Define Views... >
New... the problem also did not appear.
Don't know why that one view didn't work in that one From column while
in the Inbox.

Alan - Yahooooo!!!! That totally fixed this problem - very strange that this
is how it had to be handle. After I switched to View > Current View > >
Messages with AutoPreview, my preview pane closed. So I turned the preview
pane back on - and I could still search!!! Thank you very much for sharing!!!
